Guide
The walk from 61 Church to Thames Street
Three minutes downhill. Leave the car in the space and go.
01
The route
Walk down Church Street toward the harbor. You'll pass historic Historic Hill houses, and Trinity Church's white steeple is just up the hill behind you. Thames Street crosses at the bottom, about three minutes away. Turn right for Brick Market and Washington Square, or cross Thames for Bowen's Wharf and the water.

Within five minutes
- Bowen's Wharf: more than 30 local shops and restaurants on a working waterfront, including the long-running Black Pearl.
- Bannister's Wharf: next door, home of the Clarke Cooke House.
- Thames Street: pubs, cafés, ice cream and shops in both directions.
- White Horse Tavern: one of America's oldest taverns, a short walk past Washington Square.

And head the other way: Broadway
Walk uphill from the front door instead and you reach Broadway in about five minutes — Newport's local side, where year-round residents eat and drink away from the harbor crowds.
- The Fastnet Pub (1 Broadway): a real-deal Irish pub overlooking Washington Square, with 30-plus drafts, live music, trivia nights, and darts.
- Corner Cafe (110 Broadway): a beloved local spot for breakfast and wood-fired pizza, BYOB and first-come, first-served.
- Perro Salado: inventive Latin-inspired fare in a historic house just off the top of Broadway.
- Broadway in between: wine bars, taquerias, coffee shops and antiques stores the locals keep to themselves.
